Character Limits for SEO: Complete Reference

Why Character Count Matters in SEO

Search engines and social platforms truncate content beyond specific character limits. When your title tag, meta description, or social post exceeds its limit, it gets cut off with "..." — which looks unprofessional, reduces click-through rate, and can hide your most important message. Knowing exactly how many characters you are working with is a basic but essential SEO habit.

SEO Character Limits Reference

  • Title tag: 50–60 characters. Google renders titles based on pixel width (~600px), which translates to roughly 60 characters. Use the SERP preview tool to see your exact visual length.
  • Meta description: 140–155 characters. Anything beyond 155 characters is typically truncated in search results.
  • H1 heading: No hard limit, but 20–70 characters is recommended for readability. Longer h1s may be partially ignored by Google.
  • URL slug: Under 75 characters including domain. Shorter is better — aim for 3–5 keywords maximum.
  • Alt text: Under 125 characters. Screen readers stop reading alt text beyond this point.
  • Twitter / X post: 280 characters. URLs are shortened to 23 characters regardless of actual URL length.
  • Facebook post: 63,206 characters, but only the first ~400–500 show before "See more".
  • Instagram caption: 2,200 characters, but only the first ~125 show before "more".
  • LinkedIn post: 3,000 characters for personal posts; 1,300 characters show before "see more".

Meta Description: Write to the Limit, Not Under It

Many SEOs write short meta descriptions when 140–155 characters of well-crafted copy is the goal. A complete description has room for: your primary keyword, the value proposition, and a call to action. A 90-character description wastes 60 characters of free advertising space in Google's search results. Use this character counter to push your descriptions to 140+ characters before publishing.

Title Tag: Front-Load Your Keyword

When Google truncates a title at 60 characters, everything after the cut is hidden from searchers. Place your primary keyword in the first 40 characters of your title so it remains visible even when truncated. For example: "Keyword Density Checker — Free Tool | SearchRankTool" puts the keyword first, before any branding. Check the generated meta tags to ensure your titles are properly structured.
